The player communicated his decision of retirement to BCCI a day after he made the public announcement via Instagram post. However, the usual norm in place is that the player informs the Board before he makes a public announcement. The Board confirmed the news of retirement on Monday and admired the former Indian player for his key performances in the limited-overs format.
The BCCI issued a statement stating: “Attacking left-hand batsman Suresh Raina officially communicated to BCCI on Sunday about his decision to retire from international cricket”.
Sourav Ganguly, president of BCCI paid a tribute to the player and stated: “Suresh Raina has been one of the key performers in limited-overs cricket for India. Coming lower down the order and playing some of the match-winning knocks requires a lot of skill and talent”.
The 33-year-old made his ODI debut in July 2005 against Sri Lanka. Raina, in his 13-year career, became the first Indian to score a century in all formats of international cricket and he also is the first Indian to score a century in the Twenty20 format. He has played 18 Tests, 226 ODIs, and 78 T20Is for the country and has scored 768, 5615, and 1605 runs respectively. He even had a brief period of captaining the team.
The player however was due to make an ODI comeback against New Zealand in 2016, though he had to be dropped because of ill health. He last represented the country in the England Tour of 2018.
