August 15, 2020 (Saturday) saw both highs and lows of the day, as India celebrated its 73rd Independence Day and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (M.S. Dhoni), retires from international cricket. He, however, continues to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the coming IPL (Indian Premier League). The CEO of CSK, Kasi Viswanath confirmed the same and stated that M.S. Dhoni will continue to play till 2022.
With 12,266 runs across all the formats of international cricket Dhoni bringing the curtain down and ending his 16 years golden run in the sport is definitely going to leave a void.
Dhoni made his international debut in the year 2004 and is the only skipper to have lifted all the three International Cricket Council (ICC) trophies – the World Cup (50 over), the World Twenty20, and the Champions Trophy. He retired from Test cricket in December 2014 and further stepped down from ODI captaincy in January 2017.
There was anyway speculation doing the rounds since the former skipper of the Indian cricket team had decided to a break after the ICC ODI World Cup. He went on to join his regiment in the Indian Army for a short while during the said break.
M.S Dhoni decided to announce retirement through social media in an Instagram post writing “Thanks. Thanks for ur love and support throughout. from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired”.
BCCI confirmed M.S. Dhoni’s retirement via media release at 9.18 pm the same day stating “Former India captain Mr. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has announced his retirement from international cricket. The boy from Ranchi, who made his ODI debut in 2004, changed the face of Indian cricket with his calm demeanor, sharp understanding of the game, and astute leadership qualities”.
