Matthew Hayden along with the Lisa Singh an Indian-origin politician have appointed by the Australian government as trade envoys to India so as to advance the business ties with the country. On Monday (31st September 2020), the board of the Australia-India council announced the new appointments.
Marise Payne, the Foreign Affairs ministers state: “Ashok Jacob has been re-appointed as chair, and will be joined by three new board members”. Further, Lisa Singh from Tasmania who is the former Senator of the Labor Party would be appointed as the Deputy Chair.
Apart from the cricket icon Matthew Hayden and Lisa Sing, the third appointment is that of former Victoria Premier Ted Baillieu.
As per Payne “The council plays an important role in advancing Australia’s foreign and economic policy interests with India”.
The 40-year-old former international cricketer owing to his spending sporting career was made the Member of the Order of Australia in the year 2010. The former cricket Matthew Hayden has 40 international centuries, 103 Tests and 161 One Day Internationals under his name for Australia.
Hayden has also served as a board member since 2018 at the Institute for Australia India Engagement.
Ashok Jacob on the other hand has chaired the council since 2014 and is the executive chairman of the investment management group Ellerston Capital. He is also a proud holder of the Ashoka Medal as conferred by the Australia India Business Council, Victoria, in the year 2013.
