CHINA HAS BEEN ADMINISTERING COVID VACCINE SINCE JULY?

Amidst the pandemic, China since 22nd July has been administering a vaccine for COVID-19 that was domestically prepared to a large number of people as per a health official. On 22nd July, the health official had informed that a large number of people that include the armed forces, medical staff, and even employees of companies that work overseas on the BRI projects have been giving shots of a Sars-Cov-2 vaccine.

Tao Lina who is an immunology expert was quoted saying: “The number of people being vaccinated on an urgent basis may reach hundreds of thousands across China, considering that personnel in wider sectors are being offered free injections. But it’s difficult to give an accurate figure since the Chinese military has begun mass vaccinations but has not released details.”

On Sunday (23rd July), the director of the National Health Commission’s Development Centre for Medical Science and Technology, Zheng Zhongwei told the state news that the authorization for the “emergency use” for workers including health workers and border officials of the above-mentioned vaccine has been given by the government.

As of now, there are no details regarding which vaccine candidate was being used or how many people have been given the shots. However, Zheng maintains that dispensation is in line with the law and rules that give allowance to the usage of the unapproved vaccine in case of serious public health events.

Zheng mentioned: “We’ve drawn up a series of plan packages, including medical consent forms, side-effect monitoring plans, rescuing plans, compensation plans, to make sure the emergency use is well regulated and monitored”.

Currently, China sports eight different vaccines that are still underway the clinical trials with none having the approval to be on the market. However, some of the vaccines are being administered on an “urgent basis” since the past month with a procedure that gives way for two doses. The second dose is given after a month of the first dose.

This update considering the dispensation of vaccine is the first apparent confirmation as provided by China regarding the use of vaccines.
