In crucial times like these, when the entire world is grappling with a pandemic so threatening to human life it becomes really important to do our part and not spread false rumors or mistaken information in the community. Keeping this in mind, social networking sites seem to be really watchful when it comes down to a violation of their respective policy on coronavirus misinformation.
Twitter Inc, on Tuesday (28th July), informed that they have frozen Donald Trump Jr.’s Twitter handle for 12 hours after asking him to delete a recent tweet that provided misinformation related to Covid-19.
President’s eldest son on 27th July posted a video that showcased a handful of doctors were scene making false claims regarding hydroxychloroquine being the cure of Covid-19. The doctors can also be seen stating that face masks are no longer a necessity. The video was published by other users on Facebook Inc and YouTube and was subsequently taken down after gathering millions of views as it violated the sites’ guidelines on Covid-19 misinformation. “
U.S President’s son on Tuesday (28th July), following the restrictions imposed said in an interview with Fox News Channel, “They’re censoring my account. They’re censoring others”. He further added “this never happens to someone saying something that benefits the left. It only hurts conservatives”.
His reason for posting the video was that “it seemed very contrary to the narrative that they’ve been force-feeding us.”
On Monday (27th July), even President Trump retweeted multiple versions of the video on the micro-blogging site with links to the original video. As a part of actions taken by Twitter Inc to uphold its user guidelines, President Trump’s tweet was also deleted. As per a spokesperson from the social media site, the U.S President had only posted a few excerpts or versions of the video and not the actual video whereas, his son (Donald Trump Jr.) did post the actual video hence action was only taken against Trump Jr.’s handle.
Andy Surabian, an advisor of Trump Jr. shared a screenshot claiming that Twitter had suspended Trump Jr.’s account.
Twitter responded to the screenshot and said “this account has not been permanently suspended. Per the screenshot, the Tweet requires deletion because it violates our rules (sharing misinformation on Covid-19), and the account will have limited functionality for 12 hours”.
Surabian’s responded to this by saying “this is such silly ‘pushback’ … if someone can’t tweet, retweet or like anything, pretty sure that qualifies as a suspension, even if they use a different corporate-approved term for it.”
